Biggest South Indian Movies of 2027: Spirit, Varanasi, Dragon and More
South Indian cinema has become a pan-India force, with Telugu and Tamil films regularly releasing in Hindi and other languages at the same time. 2027 looks like a landmark year, with new films from S. S. Rajamouli, Prashanth Neel, Sandeep Reddy Vanga and Atlee. Here are the biggest ones.
Varanasi — April 7, 2027
Varanasi is S. S. Rajamouli's first film since RRR, the global hit that won an Oscar for its song Naatu Naatu. Mahesh Babu leads, with Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran. Rajamouli's films are events in their own right, and this is likely to be one of the biggest Indian releases of the decade.
Spirit — March 5, 2027
In Spirit, Prabhas plays a police officer for director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, whose Animal was a massive hit. Triptii Dimri and Vivek Oberoi also star, with T-Series co-producing.
Dragon — June 11, 2027
Jr. NTR teams up with KGF and Salaar director Prashanth Neel for Dragon, an action film with Rukmini Vasanth and Anil Kapoor. Neel's large-scale action style and NTR's mass following make this one of the most anticipated action films of the year.
Raaka — expected December 2027
Allu Arjun, fresh from the Pushpa films, stars in Raaka for Jawan director Atlee, with Deepika Padukone and Rashmika Mandanna. An exact date has not been announced yet, so treat December as an estimate.
Sankranti releases
January's Sankranti festival is a prime release window in Telugu cinema. 2027 brings Megastar Chiranjeevi's Kaaka (January 13), Ravi Teja's SVC64 (January 14) and the mythological Mahakali (January 8).
